How To Cook Quinoa On The Stove

Quinoa is easy to cook and fairly quick too.
Quinoa is one of the ingredients used in the No-Waste Nourishing Quick Meal Plan Any Season Week 1 that can be downloaded for free.

Scale

Ingredients

1.5 cups (290 g) of quinoa
2 and 1/4 cups of water
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Instructions

  1. Measure 1.5 cups (290 g) of quinoa.
  2. Rinse the quinoa in a fine mesh colander to get rid of the quinoa’s natural coating, called saponin, which can make it taste bitter or soapy.
  3. Add it to a pan with 2 and 1/4 cups of water.
  4. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt, place the lid and bring it to a boil over high heat.
  5. When it starts to boil, turn the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer.
  6. Set a timer to 16 minutes.
  7. When the alarm for the quinoa goes off, check the pot. The quinoa is ready when it has absorbed all the water.
  8. Transfer it to an airtight container and wait until it reaches room temperature before closing it and store it in the fridge.

Notes

I find it useful to use a silicone spatula whenever I’m dealing with quinoa to make sure I can easily move every little seed.

I like to use a glass container so that I can pour the quinoa even while it’s still hot. If you are going to use a plastic container, leave the quinoa in the pot until it reaches room temperature.

You can store cooked quinoa in the fridge for up to a week. Make sure to use clean cutlery when serving some of the quinoa and close the container properly after every use.

Adding oil or salt will decrease the storage time.
